Extra Fabric Behind My Collar

[2.23.2007 | Seattle Washington]

Everytime I buy a suit or sport coat at the store there is extra fabric bunched up between my shoulder blades. Is there anyway to avoid that?

Jake, A ready-made coat is built for everyone with that chest size. They cannot take into account the shoulder slopes or posture of each individual who might buy it. The end result is a "Collar Roll." 1.) Sometimes one shoulder is higher or lower than the other throwing the coat out of wack. 2.) Perhaps both of your shoulders are relatively high when the coat is made for an average sloped individual. 3.) It may be a matter of your shoulders being forward pitched creating a pull in the fabric. 4.) Or unlike me you might have good posture and you stand up straighter than the coat was built for, pushing the collar down into the coat. One thing that makes a Collar Roll worse than it is is looking to the side in a mirror. Your neck turning pulls the fabric and makes the issue look worse. There are two ways to eliminate a Collar Roll: 1.) Have a tailor remove that section and lower the collar. 2.) Buy custom made coats that take into consideration your every measurement and posture. Thank you for your question. I hope this was helpful. Jeff Collins, Professional Haberdasher
